Required Form I-9 Update for U.S. Employers

On January 31, 2020, the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) agency brought long-awaited revisions to Form I-9 and its accompanying instructions. These updates clarify who may act as an employer representative to authorize the form and to further define acceptable documentation. While employers will be required to use the updated Form I-9 and accompanying documents effective May 1, 2020, it is highly recommended to begin using the new forms immediately. Form I-9, Employment Eligibility Verification, is used to verify the identity and employment authorization of each individual that a U.S. employer hires. It is made up of three sections:

  1. Employee Information and Attestation (Identifying information completed by employees)
  2. Employer or Authorized Representative Review and Verification (Identifying information completed by employers)
  3. Reverification and Rehires (Completed by both employees and employers when employment authorization requires reverification)
